Network - Subnetting & VLANs
The following guide will walk you through the process of setting up VLANs and subnetting on your network. This guide will be using a Ubiquiti Unifi network as the example, but the concepts can be applied to any network equipment.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- The following guide assumes you have a basic understanding of networking concepts. If you are new to networking, I recommend reading through the Networking Basics guide first to get a better understanding of the concepts discussed in this guide.
- You will need access to your network equipment. This guide will be using a Ubiquiti Unifi network as the example, but the concepts can be applied to any network equipment.
- It is presumed that you have already set up your Unifi network and have adopted your devices into the Unifi Controller software. I am currently working on a guide to help you set up your Unifi network from scratch. Please check back soon for more information.
Overview of What We’ll Cover
Section titled “Overview of What We’ll Cover”This is the fun part. We introduced the goals and objectives in the Network Overview guide. Now we get to dive into the details of setting up VLANs and subnetting on your network. We will be setting up a VLAN for IoT devices, which will allow us to add our smart devices to a dedicated network segment. This will help to keep our IoT devices separate from our main network and provide an additional layer of security.
The best part is that if you get your network set up with VLANs and subnetting as shown here, you will be all set for working with Home Assistant and other IoT devices in the future.
